Comments
Kofi Annan is asking Cyprus to maintain the balance of the so called
Treaties of Guarantee and Alliance which failed to prevent Turkey from brutally
invading Cyprus twice in 1974 and savagely massacring, raping, torturing rounding-up
and ethnically cleansing its Greek Cypriot majority which lived in the north as
documented by the reports of the European Commission of Human Rights and the
Resolutions of the United Nations. The military status-quo set up by the Treaty
of Alliance was used by the American backed military junta in Greece to mount
an attempt to assassinate the president to Cyprus and his supporters just
before the Turkish invasion on the orders of Henry Kissinger (who was then
national security adviser defacto-acting-president of the US) and George Bush
Snr. (the then head of the CIA). What is the use of maintaining these failed
treaties which are the cause of Cyprus division.
Since Cyprus independence in 1960 Turkey has repeatedly sponsored terrorism and aggression against the defenceless island republic. Turkey attempted to invade Cyprus in 1963/4 by illegally parachuting in commandos and providing weapons and training to members of the TMT terrorist organisation. This aggression which saw the use Chemical weapons by Turkey resulted in the capture of the Nicosia to Kyrenia main highway. In 1967 Turkey attacked Cyprus once again and took the Larnaca to Limasol highway after coming into conflict with the United Nations peacekeeping force. Using the captured highways as bridgeheads Turkey invaded Cyprus twice in 1974 and once more used chemical weapons against civilians. All of these acts of aggression have been condemned in over 130 UN Security Council Resolutions none of which Turkey has ever complied with. These resolutions outnumber those passed again Iraq, Israel and Serbia put together yet no action has been take to enforce them. On top of this Turkey has also failed to comply with numerous European Court of Human Rights judgments ordering to unconditionally compensate the Cypriot victims of its human rights violations.
Turkey has never shown any sign of being an friend of ally of Cyprus in any way shape or form nor has is ever shown any remorse or asked to be forgiven for its unprovoked brutal and savage aggression against Cyprus and its people. Turkey does not recognise the Republic of Cyprus nor has it shown any intention of respecting its unity, independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity for over 30 years so why should Cyprus be expected to unilaterally maintain special ties of friendship with it and support its accession to the EU. Why are there no obligations for Turkey set out by Kofi Annan ?
Turkey and Greece’s relations with Cyprus should be set out in separate independent treaties where both sides mutually agree on biding obligations and commitments not in this document.
Turkey’s relations with the EU are
the business of the EU alone. It is neither Cyprus nor Kofi Annan’s business to
determine weather Turkey should be a member of the EU by the EU’s on the basis
of it fulfilling the EU’s own membership criteria.
