Comments
The above paragraph should not use language which could be considered as being divisive or misleading.
Cyprus is a multi-ethnic state ready to join the EU family of nations. Its citizens include Greek, Armenian, Maronite, Latin as well as Turkish Cypriots and also people of other ethicalities. Ethnicity and community affiliation is not the same as nationality or citizenship. The nationality of persons who are citizens of Cyprus is Cypriot and this collective term does not need and must not have any divisive qualifying terms before it.
It is unclear what Kofi Annan means by "separately expressed common will.” Are the people of Cyprus one people or are they two. How can common will be separatly expressed. This is a contradition in terms and is also devisive.
In lieu of clarification by Kofi Annan the above paragraph should be amended
as follows to emphasise the fact that the Cypriot are one people.
Amendment Required
“We, the Cypriot people, exercising our inherent
constitutive power, by our free and democratic, individually expressed common
will adopt this Foundation Agreement.”
